The composer Sir Lennox Berkley - 1903 to 1989



Sir Lennox Berkley was born in Oxford. His early childhood was influenced by access to his father's collection of piano rolls and visits to the family of his mother who lived in France. He was educated at St George's School in Harpenden. He later went to Merton College Oxford where he studied French and was cox of the College VIII.

During the Second World War he worked at the BBC and this is where he met his wife Elisabeth. They have three children.His eldest son is the composer and braodcaster Michael Berkley and his youngest son is the photographer Nick Berkley

Berkley is an enduring voice in 20th century British music and this included works ranging from synphonies to piano concertos & chamber music.

Sanderstead Singers sung a composition of his at York in 2012 called The Lord is my Sepherd.
