The Composer Jonathan Dove, born 1959

Jonathan Dove was born in London on 18th July 1959 and is an English composer of opera choral works and orchestral and chamber music. He is a well-liked contemporary composer and his music has filled opera houses around the world with delighted audiences of all ages.

He studied music at the University of Cambridge with Robin Holloway and after graduation was a freelance arranger and accompanist. in 1998 his long association with Glyndebourne resulted in a commissioning to write the opera ‘Flight’. This humorous opera was a break though moment for Dove, and he has gone on to write a substantial number of other operas since.


Outside of the concert hall and opera house, Dove has provided many scores for major theatrical productions. He is an Associate of the National Theatre, and for many years was Music Advisor to the Almeida Theatre. He has also written for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and for the New York Shakespeare Festival. Dove was presented with the Ivor Novello Award for Classical Music in 2008.

Dove has composed many works for concert and liturgical use, and these are now in the repertoires of choirs around the world. Amongst the many anthems Dove has put to music is an adaptation of the psalm ‘Seek Him that maketh the Seven Stars'.

'Seek Him that maketh the Seven Stars' was commissioned by the Royal Academy of Arts and first performed at St. James Piccadilly in May 1995.

The anthem has been regularly sung by many choirs in many Cathedrals since then. It was sung by Sanderstead Singers at Chester Cathedral in August 2018. An excerpt from a recording of this service can be found on the Chester Cathedral page of our website.
